Primary School
Our Primary School caters for pupils from Grade 1 up to Grade 7. We are also an exam centre for ZIMSEC. Plans are underway to introduce the Cambridge syllabus and our teachers are currently undergoing rigorous training to be able to deliver the twin syllabi.
What we offer
As the name of the school clearly spells out, the Junior school endeavours to provide a very high standard of learning in all areas of a child’s life at Primary school level. These areas include the academic, sport and life skills in general.
Attendance
All pupils should attend school unless they are not well or due to other commitments beyond their control. It is important that the parent/guardian informs the teacher so that the class register is marked accordingly. Attendance at all functions in the school is compulsory unless excused by the teacher or the Head. Exemption from sports will only be granted on production of the doctor’s certificate.
Assemblies
Assemblies are important occasions in the school, not least because they give the opportunity for all sections of the school to meet together as one big family. Children’s participation in assembly is very important for their educational development; they show what they have done in class, give sport and club reports or explain a moral issue to the rest of the school. It must be stressed that children should always come to assembly (Mondays and Fridays) looking smart in blazers – without fail. Parents of the class presenting assembly are welcome to attend.
STUDENT’S DETAILS
Social details on each child are useful in teaching. Kindly furnish the necessary details to the school – home address, parents’ occupation, contact numbers etc. If there are changes in circumstances (deaths, change of address, change of contact details etc.) try to relay the new details to the teacher so that we can update our records.
Requirements at registration
- Child’s birth certificate
- Registration fee
- Proof of residence
- 2 passport size photos
- Copy of child’s previous report or recommendation letter, whichever is applicable.
COMMUNICATION
Parents of the school are encouraged to contact the Head on problems, plans, suggestions or just to share successes and information. It does not help to write unsigned letters or make anonymous calls. If one has a genuine problem then they should not have a problem identifying themselves. Parents are expected to be upfront and are encouraged to write their concerns and to avoid confrontation.
Classroom issues should be directed to the class teacher while administrative matters should be directed to the administrator. To be fair to both parties it is vital that the parent makes an appointment to see the teacher or Head. Reporting a matter to the wrong office may not relive the situation as the message may get lost. Needless to say, that the channels of communication between the parent and school should be managed carefully.
PTA/SDA/ SDC
Every year a new PTA is appointed into office. The PTA is run in accordance with the school constitution which is available for perusal upon request. The term for each committee expires on 15 February every year and a new committee is expected to be appointed. Parents will be advised on meeting dates in due course. The objective of a functional PTA is to provide a platform where concerns are raised and addressed by both the school and parents as a united front. We expect parents to utilize this arm of the school for development purposes.
Relating with school staff.
Parents are advised to keep their relationships with teachers and all support staff well managed. Relationships that go beyond the friendly parent and teacher may in the long run affect your child negatively. Avoid personalizing these relationships. We also encourage parents to respect our staff members and avoid shouting and outbursts. Avoid making special after school arrangements as these may backfire in the end. All extra lessons are managed and directed by the school.
DISCIPLINE
We have found that good behavior is collective responsibility between the home and school. We both have to be fair, firm and make sure that the discipline in every child must come from inside them. Beating your child will not earn you their respect, only their fear. Students must be taught to respect home, class and school rules, have parameters and structures to work and play. Reward good behaviour and good habits and always liaise with the teachers on these matters. It must be appreciated that no proper and effective learning or teaching can take place if there is no discipline. Some form of punishment may be applied to your child in a bid to harness good behaviour.
BOOKS
These reflect that true quality and quantity of our teaching. When these come home they must be treated with utmost care and respect. All torn or spoiled exercise books, diaries and test books must be replaced without delay. Parents are expected to supply all exercise books. Check with the teacher for specific requirements. The school provides most of the textbooks. However parents are welcome to supplement reading materials.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
All children have to belong to at least one club. Parents need to support their child in his or her chosen club by making sure they purchase the required equipment, payment of any charges involved and by attending festivals and competitions in that particular discipline. The school provides the following sports and activities: Cricket, Hockey, Tennis, Computers, Drama club, Chess, legal club and medical club. Swimming is offered only in the first term and in 3rd term. A sports fee of USD10 is payable per term at the sports department to enable us to run all sports affairs effectively.
GAMING HOUSES
We have two gaming houses in the school, each with its own distinct house colour. Children are allocated a house at registration. The concept of gaming houses is to instil the team spirit and competitive attitude in pupils. We call upon parents to identify with and take pride in their child’s house in academic work, quiz, behaviour and sports competitions. Every pupils should be identified well on gaming days by wearing the colour coded T. Shirt specified for his/ her particular house.
